Aging: Evolution of Life Span Revisited
نویسنده
چکیده
A new study reports that high rates of extrinsic mortality can lead to the evolution of a longer life - a pattern opposite to that expected under the classic predictions of the evolutionary theory of aging.

Longer Life Span Evolves under High Rates of Condition-Dependent Mortality
Aging affects nearly all organisms, but how aging evolves is still unclear. The central prediction of classic theory is that high extrinsic mortality leads to accelerated aging and shorter intrinsic life span. However, this prediction considers mortality as a random process, whereas mortality in nature is likely to be condition dependent. Therefore, the novel theory maintains that condition dep...
متن کاملAging, Evolvability, and the Individual Benefit Requirement
There is a class of theories of aging (variously termed adaptive aging, aging by design, aging selected for its own sake, or programmed death theories) that hold that an organism design that limits life span conveys benefits and was selected specifically because it limits life span. These theories have enjoyed a resurgence of popularity because of the discovery of genes that promote aging in va...
متن کاملSexual conflict, life span, and aging.
The potential for sexual conflict to influence the evolution of life span and aging has been recognized for more than a decade, and recent work also suggests that variation in life span and aging can influence sexually antagonistic coevolution. However, empirical exploration of these ideas is only beginning. Here, we provide an overview of the ideas and evidence linking inter- and intralocus se...
متن کاملOn Aging and Life Span of Human Species Based on its Evolution from Australopithecus up to Modern Human
Applying the mathematical model of vitality in human aging we have estimated the total life duration of human species and the follow up of its involution. The increase of cranial capacity during genus homo evolution and the rise of life span in different periods from ancestral times have been used as parameters. We postulated that increasing longevity negatively influences the species maintenan...
